Tiger Brand Turns 100!

In October of 1923, the American Steel & Wire company (a division of US Steel) submitted a trademark for Tiger® Brand mining cables. There is no record as to why a Tiger was chosen. The brand was originally applied to the company’s two main product lines – wire rope and jacketed electrical cables.

As underground coal mining equipment was electrified, Tiger Brand power cables were developed to support the dynamic equipment applications of this harsh environment. In the 1930s, the company name was changed to USS American Electrical Wire & Cable but the Tiger Brand name stayed the same. Through the Great Depression, World War II, America’s rise to global superpower and the baby boom, American Electrical Wire & Cable perfected the art of manufacturing Tiger Brand jacketed power cables for mining applications. The brand became so popular with customers that, in 1954, the company changed names again to USS Tiger Brand Electrical Wire & Cable.

Today, Tiger Brand is recognized as the high-quality leader in the North American surface and underground mining market, with a focus on supporting safer, more productive mining.

“After 100 years of continuous operation, Tiger Brand is well positioned to support the next generation of mining operations around the world,” says AmerCable President Paul Davis. “As the world continues to change, the need for ore and minerals will continue to drive the mining industry and Tiger Brand will be  leading the way!”

AmerCable awarded offshore platform cable contracts by Fluor for New Fortress Energy’s Fast LNG 1, 2 & 3

AmerCable has been awarded the topside platform power, control and instrumentation cable contracts for New Fortress Energy Inc’s (NFE) Fast LNG 1, 2 and 3. These offshore projects, designed and built by Fluor, are integrated modular mid-scale LNG gas treatment and liquefaction plants that operate on a fixed offshore platform.

New Fortress is planning to install its first two Fast LNG units in US Federal waters about 16 nm off Grand Isle, Louisiana. The two independent liquefaction trains at this deepwater “port” will each export about 1.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG.

AmerCable will be supplying each project with its world-class GEXOL® 331-HF fire resistant Low Smoke Halogen-Free (LSHF) cables. Fluor’s LNG liquefaction design pairs the latest advancements in modular, midsize liquefaction technology based on jack-up rigs or similar offshore infrastructure. Though small by onshore standards, the plant design offers many advantages, like low-cost and speed-to-market, which are critical factors at a time of high demand for LNG.  The platforms are currently under construction at Kiewit Shipyard in Texas.

“AmerCable was the first to offer LSHF cables in the Gulf of Mexico, so it’s appropriate we are providing the cable package for this innovative, first-of-its-kind project,” says Rudy Bright, AmerCable’s Technical Sales Director for Offshore Products. “We look forward to working with the Fluor team to help make this a highly successful project.”

The United States is the world’s largest producer of natural gas, which supplies approximately 30% of the country’s energy mix. Growth in the international market for natural gas has given rise to the use of natural gas in a liquefied form, or LNG. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state of approximately -260° F, for shipping and storage. The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than its volume in its gaseous state, which makes it possible to transport at a lower cost to places pipelines do not reach. Natural gas is cleaner and more efficient than other traditional fuels and is seen as a key part of the energy transition movement.

AmerCable awarded cable contract with Keppel Offshore & Marine for Revolution Wind offshore electrical substations

AmerCable, an industry leader in offshore power, control and instrumentation cables, will provide GEXOL® 331-HF fire resistant, low smoke halogen-free (LSHF) cables for Revolution Wind’s two electrical substations built by Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd. While Revolution Wind’s 50 turbines are the most visible part of the project, the electrical substations play a critical role by consolidating each turbine’s generated power before transmission to the onshore grid.

This 704MW project, a 50/50 joint venture partnership between Ørsted U.S. Offshore Wind and Eversource Energy, is located off the U.S. Eastern Seaboard 15 miles south of Rhode Island and 32 miles east of Connecticut. The Keppel O&M substations are scheduled to be completed in 2024 and, when the project is complete, will generate clean energy for 350,000 East Coast homes. AmerCable has 30+ years of experience in producing world-class GEXOL® LSHF cables, which are designed specifically for long service life in the harsh operating environment of offshore platform operations. All GEXOL® LSHF cables are produced in the U.S. at AmerCable’s facility in El Dorado, Arkansas.

“Our cables are well-suited for these critical offshore wind substations,” says Rudy Bright, AmerCable’s Technical Sales Director for Offshore Products. “GEXOL® cables have been proven at hundreds of offshore facilities around the world for 28+ years. We are pleased to work with Keppel O&M and contribute to the success of the Revolution Wind project.”

AmerCable Systems providing unique connectivity solution for the first offshore wind-powered charging station for support vessels

Stillstrom, a spinout of Maersk Supply Service, has developed an innovative offshore charging buoy system that connects ships to electricity generated by offshore wind operations. Open-sea electric power will help decarbonize the maritime sector by giving idling vessels a way to keep their systems running without burning fossil fuels and an opportunity for ships with battery capacity to charge.

“The mission is to build an offshore charging infrastructure for a clean ocean future,” said Kristian Borum Jorgensen, CEO at Stillstrom.

How does it work? Stillstrom, which means “quiet power” in Danish, will install a proof-of-concept charging buoy at a UK offshore wind farm. Service vessels for this operation will maneuver into position and plug into the buoy which is connected to the wind farm’s grid. This will supply clean power, allowing the boats to turn off their carbon-producing engines overnight.

AmerCable Systems has designed and is supplying the complex cable connection system between the charging buoy and the ship, which includes a topsides carousel reeling system with an overwater Electro-Optic quick-disconnect umbilical. AmerCable, a long-time industry leader in cold ironing ship-to-shore cables and harsh environment, offshore umbilical systems, will produce this first-ever solution at its facility in Katy, Texas.

“AmerCable Systems appreciates Stillstrom’s confidence in our ability to design and construct such a complicated connectivity system,” says AmerCable president Paul Davis. “We love the challenge of working with innovative companies that think outside the box.”

ABOUT STILLSTROM

Stillstrom is an innovative spinout from the A.P. Moller Maersk Group that aims to tackle offshore idling emissions globally. Its offshore charging products deliver clean energy to vessels of all shapes and sizes, acting as a charging point to hybrid and/or electric vessels or as a green parking lot to the thousands of vessels idling outside of ports on any given day.

ABOUT AMERCABLE SYSTEMS

AmerCable Systems is the cable assembly and connectivity solutions group within AmerCable. Since 1997, it has provided customers with highly innovative, engineered-for-purpose cable connectivity solutions for the power generation, upstream offshore and land energy markets plus other harsh-environment industrial applications. AmerCable Systems Provides Unique Disconnectable Over Water Umbilical System for MODEC FPSO

MODEC, Inc. has announced that the FPSO MIAMTE MV34, operating in the Offshore Area 1 block in the Gulf of Mexico, achieved its First Oil production on February 23, 2022.

AmerCable Systems provided the connectivity system for the industry’s first Disconnectable Tower Yoke Mooring System (“DTYMS”). This 35kV Over Water Umbilical system (OWU) was designed by SOFEC, Inc., a MODEC group company. If severe weather threatens the shallow water area where the FPSO Miamante MV34 is moored, it can disconnect and depart to safer waters until the threat has passed. Prior to this, the connection from an FPSO to its mooring tower was permanent, meaning the FPSO was unable to avoid harsh weather and hurricanes, which often lead to severe vessel damage and downtime.

Since its inception in 2002, AmerCable Systems has been the offshore upstream industry leader in connectivity “firsts.”  The Systems Group specializes in highly complex projects that operate in harsh environments for a variety of industrial-grade applications.
